Yaroslav Sudzilovsky

Yaroslav Sudzilovsky was born in 1978 in Moscow. He is the son of musical parents - his mother is violist and his father is a well-known cello professor, Sergei Sudzilovsky; both perform in the Moscow Philharmonic Society. In 1985, Yaroslav entered the Gnessin High School in the class of his father, and remained there for twelve years. He then entered the Ipolitov Ivana Moscow State Music Academy, studying under Natalia Shahovskaya. In 1999, he began composition studies at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory - working with V.Tarnopolsky; post-graduate studies at the Conservatory with K.S. Khachaturian began in 2002.

Yaroslav has been performing regularly since 1997, and since then has focused largely on contemporary music, premiering a number of concertos and solo works by Russian and other composers - including those by Janna Polevaya, Mark Knauphman, and Iosef Stopnitsky. He has won a number of awards for his performances.

Not surprisingly, many of Yaroslav's composition are for cello - where he takes advantage of his knowledge of the instruments to create unique sonic approaches, including amplification - as in his Chechen Sonata (1999) and the ballet suite, Robert's Awakening; as well as more traditional works - such as his cycle Carnivals of the Night for cello and orchestra and the drama for cello, orchestra, chorus, and narrator, Auto Distraction. He has participated in a number of contemporary festivals in Russia, including Moscow Autumn, The Musical Panorama of Russia, as well as festivals in Vienna, Paris, and Stockholm.
